The Gold Star Wives Service Officer fields questions from military surviving spouses about problems and dilemmas. The Service Officer provides answers and helps to solve their dilemmas by directing the spouse to the proper source on where to obtain answers to their question or researches the answer.

The Service Officer prepares a quarterly column for the National Newsletter on top issues, or in changes to benefits or procedures.  Often surviving spouses are unaware of problems and do not recognize them until a suggested question touches an item which concerns them.

The Service Officer maintains relationships with various VA Offices and with benefit agents within the health plans (mainly CHAMPVA and TRICARE) GSW members use.  She should also be versed in Social Security Benefits (how and when to apply). The Service Officer should be familiar with the various death benefits and how to apply for them.

The Service Officer subscribes to publications and newsletters that inform of changes relevant to the questions members have.
